Tutorial 1, CCL402 Advanced Strategies in Teaching of Social Studies II

What I Desire to Learn from this Module

1. Techniques and strategies that will facilitate me in becoming not merely an effective but affective SS educator.

2. IT software and skills to enhance the teaching and learning of SS.

Reflection
Glad to have seen many familiar faces from the previous semester, and many more newer ones this morning. New tutorial mates, new tutor, new syllabus, a new beginning… new promises await…

I was particularly awed by how Ms Ananthi spent a considerable amount of time and effort in getting the trainees to get to know each other, before grouping us into our respective teams. The activities were a surefire way to help break the ice, during that awkward first tutorial.

If it was to demonstrate how we ought to kick of the first SS lesson to a rousing start, this sure did the job. I'd like to start my SS lessons similarly, so that students are not thrown into a group with someone they barely know in the very first week of school. Similar ice-breaking activities would come in handy too.

It is also essential that I spell out the rules and expectations clearly during the very first lesson, so that students can anticipate what to expect, and how to behave.

What I've Learnt from Tutorials 1 Thus Far
Do not jump straight into the syllabus without first "warming up" the class. Allow students to get comfortable with one another before going into group work.

I am glad that you found the first session useful. Setting the right tone is important for the first lesson....I have only highlighted only a few of the strategies that you can use in the class. If you are interested, you can look at Spencer Kagan's books on classbuilding and teambuilding activities. Other authors have also written on this aspect. Do try it out in your class, yah
