1C Vocabulary List

Dearest 1 C,
Please share your vocabulary lists here.

Remember to include the following:
1. Class, Register Number, Name (1C 09 Shar Rook Can)
2. "I have checked my work for grammar and spelling BEFORE posting it"

Your lists must have:
(i) 1 new/good/interesting word a day
(ii) SIMPLE meaning of the word that you understand
(iii) The sentence that used the word
(iv) Your OWN original sentence to demonstrate (show) your understanding of this new word

For instance,
1. Floccinaucinilipilification
2. The action (or habit) of considering (or describing (or judging)) something as worthless (or unimportant)
3. "I loved him for... his flocci-nauci-nihili-pili-fication of money"
4. I am upset with mum's floccinaucinilipilification of my excellent examination results of three A stars and an A. She is simply impossible to please!

Amongst you, are those who have lost beween 1 to 20 CA1 Marks for the following offences:

  1. Refusal to follow instructions to include word count, declaration, and to perform spell and grammar check BEFORE posting)
  2. Refusal to submit your writing despite numerous calls to your parents, personal reminders and warnings in January, February and March
  3. Submitting work that is horrendously late and that shows little effort


Those who still refused to submit your work or did so after 4 March, 18:00H have received a zero for this CA1 component.

Hi Mr lau!!!I am Jody!!!I am going to tell you about my sadness and happiness!!!I will tell u about my sadness first...On the 12 April 2008,my best friend,Abinaya,went back to India to study and about 1 year then she come back and visit us!!!On that day,my friends and teachers went to the Airport to send her off...before she checked in,our teachers brought us to the nearby resturant to eat!!!After a while,her mother came to the resturant and tell my friends that she had to checked in already...Upon hearing that,my friends and i started to cry..:'(I was very sad...I quickly ran her and hugged her!!!
Then,she went in...i kept on crying and crying...non-stop!!!Then one of my teacher comforted me...then i finally stop crying..that the end of my sadness!!!Now i am going to tell u my happiness...On the 19 dec 2008,My friend and i went to Fahrenheit concert!!!It was so fun!!!we got the tickets from my mother's friend.She gave it to us!!!The Fahrenheit were so handsome,I love them!!!They sang alot of songs,i love their songs n costumes,so nice!!!Example:got pilot suite,dancing suite...Ti amo,ai dao...The concert lasted 3 hour!!!I enjoyed it alot...I never regret going althought it ends at 11 plus at night and we still missed the last bus...my friend's father had to come and picked us from the indoor stadium......It was the happiest day of my life.........thats the end of my story!!!! from 1C o7 Jodylim

I am sharing my vocabulary list with you.

1)Floccinaucinihilipilification
Meaning: The action or habit of estimating something as worthless.

Sentence: Please do not floccinaucinihilipilificate me.

My own sentence: My mother has a habit of floccinaucinihilipilificating people.

2)Miscellaneous
Meaning: Composed of varied things.(each being different)

Sentence: This is a task force of miscellaneous specialists.

My own sentence: My bag is filled with miscellaeous things.

3)Friable
Meaning: Crumbly – Easily reduced to tiny particles

Sentence: Do not stand there as it is friable.

My own sentence: Come and look,that rock is friable!

4)Arbitrageur
Meaning: The person who makes money from buying something in one place,and sellingit in another place at the same time.

Sentence: The arbitrageur is very cunning for a first-timer.

My own sentence: The arbitrageur cheats people for their money.

5)Usurped
Meaning: To seize and hold by force without legal authority.

Sentence: You cannot usurpe your neightbour’s land.

My own sentence: Usurping is an offense and a bad action.

6)Phenomenon
Meaning: Something that happens or exsists in society

Sentence: Being homeless is not a new phenomenon anymore.

My own sentence: The rate of stealing and picpocketing phenomenon is increasing.

7)Credulous
Meaning: Always believing what you are told,easily deceived,gullible.

Sentence: He charmed credulous investorsout of million of dollars.

My own sentence: That credulous girl is cheated by that cunning man.

8)Unwitting
Meaning: Not knowing,unaware.
Sentence: We are unwitting victims of the system.

My own sentence: She is an example of an unwitting victim.

9) Absquatulated
Meaning: to flee,abscond.

Sentence: The old prospector absquatulated with our picks and shovel.

My own sentence: It was very dishonest of him to absquatulate with our fund raised for charity.

10) Eschew
Meaning: to abstain or keep away from.

Sentence: We must eschew from evil or we will get influenced from them.

My own sentence: I eschew from eating brocolli.

Declaration:

3) Excruciating
Meaning-Intense physical pain
Sentence-I tried to move my leg but the pain was excruciating.
Own Sentence-The situation was excruciatingly embarrassing.

4) Enticing
Meaning-Attractive
Sentence-It was an enticing travel offer.
Own Sentence-The kitchen was filled with the rick enticing smell of spices.

5) Enthralling
Meaning-Interesting or exciting
Sentence-The enthralling story kept the students wide awake.

Meaning-Very detailed design or structure
Sentence-The weavers produce rugs that are of intricate patterns

7) Embezzle
Meaning-To steal money that has been entrusted to you.
Sentence-The banker embezzled $10millon dollars from the branch and disappeared.
Own Sentence-The runaway fugitive was caught at the customs after he was guilty embezzling the funds of the company.

8) Humanitarian
Meaning-Compassionate
Sentence-The Sichuan earthquake is one of the worst humanitarian crisis in China’s history.
Own Sentence-Two of the hostages were released on humanitarian grounds.

9) Inherent
Meaning-Essential feature that gives something its character
Sentence-The design of the building had inherent weaknesses.
Own Sentence-What are the long-term risks inherent in working outdoors.

10) Dissent
Meaning-Strong disagreement
Sentence-He banned political parties and crushed dissent.
Own Sentence-he expressed his disapproval to the project in a tone of dissent.

11) Inopportune
Meaning-Inconvenient time or moment
Sentence-Those are unwelcome guests who insist on turning up at the most inopportune times.
Own Sentence-The publication of the letter had been inopportune.

12) Jettison
Meaning-To get rid of useless things.
Sentence-We may have to jettison some parts of the business.
Own Sentence-A storm forced them to jettison most of the cargo.

Meaning-Plain in style and without decoration

Meaning: gets angry very fast
Sentence: He is an ill-tempered teacher as he gets frustrated every time a student does not hand in his or her homework.

2) Mirthful
Meaning: feeling happy
Sentence: The boy felt extremely mirthful after knowing that he scored the highest aggregate score for the PSLE in Singapore.

3) Disconsolate
Meaning: extremely sad
Sentence: The team felt disconsolate after losing the football match.

4) Consternation
Meaning: shocked
Sentence: The residents were consternated after feeling a tremor on the ground.

5) Demur
Meaning: a feeling of regret
Sentence: The felt demurred after stealing from the shop an expensive PSP game.

Own sentence: I wonder why my friends keep floccinaucinihilipilificate me when I forgot to bring my books!


2. Frisson

Meaning: A sudden, passing sensation of excitement

Sentence: The movie offers the viewer the occasional frisson of seeing a character in mortal danger.

Own sentence: I felt a frisson just as they were about to announce the winner in my category.

Meaning: To become aware of

This is my vocabulary list.

1) Glimpse

Meaning: a look for a very short time when you do not see the person or thing completely

Sentence: he caught a glimpse of her in the crowd.

My own sentence: I caught a glimpse of my Chinese teacher when I was in the wet market.

2) Mantle

Meaning: the role and responsibilities of an important person or job.

Sentence: the vice-president must now take on the mantle of supreme power

My own sentence: the president is taking over the mantle of Singapore.

3) Phenomenal

Meaning: very great or impressive.

Sentence: the product has been a phenomenal success.

My own sentence: I had done a phenomenal project that everybody likes it.

4) Restorative

Meaning: a thing that makes you feels better, stronger

Sentence: sleep is the best restorative there is

My own sentence: eating is the restorative for pigs.

5) Spiff

Meaning: To make yourselves look neat and attractive.

Sentence: she spiffed her old shoes.

My own sentence: I decided to spiff up myself when I went for my job interview.

6) Shoddy

Meaning: made or done badly and with not enough care.

1.Loathe

Meaning: to feel disgusted

Sentence: I loathe people who spread malicious gossip.

My own sentance:I loathe the uniforms at my brother's school.

2.Enshroud

Meaning:to conceal,hide

Sentence: The mist enshroud the hills.

My own sentance: Angelina enshroud her pimples with a concealer.

3.Interject

Meaning: To make a sudden remark between other remarks.

Sentence: "I don't agree at all!" he interjected.

My own sentence: "I don't want to migrate!" Hannah interjected while her parents are dicussing about migrating to India.

4. Rumpus

Meaning: A noisy arguement or disagreement.

Sentence: They are bound to kick out a rumpus about all this damaged.

My own sentence: There is ought to be a rumpus between Singapore and Vietnam fans over Singapore's defeat at the soccer match.

5. Tuberculosis

Meaning: an infectious disease that may affect almost any tissue of the body, esp. the lungs, caused by the organism Mycobacterium tuberculosis, and characterized by tubercles.

Sentence: Tuberculosis is easily spread and can be deadly if not properly treated.

My own sentence: My grandfather passed away from tuberculosis since he did not have the money to get himself treated.

6.Swat

meaning: to hit,smack

sentence:Lia swat the fly between her math book.

My own sentence: Mum took the fly- swatter out of the drawer and swat the fly.

7.Axila

Meaning:Underarm

sentence:The ladies blush when he scratches his axila openly in front of them.

My own sentence:Denis scratched his axila furiously as he has a rash.

8.Miffed

Meaning: put into an irritatable mood.

sentence: I was miffed when they didn't invite me to the party.

My own sentence: I was miffed when my little brother spilled orange juice on my new shirt.

Meaning : not intersting, not bright, not clear, cloudy, slow understanding

Sentence : Trade is dull, The first half of the game was pretty dull

My own sentence : English Language class is not dull at all.


4)Shed
Meaning : a small simple building/to get rid of sth, to let sth fall, to send light sth

Sentence : A duck's feather shed water immediately

My own sentence : I shed tears when studying in Singapore was too difficult.

Meaning : to smoke a cigarette, to make smoke/an act of breathing

Sentence : When the war ended, people finally had cause to rejoice

My own sentence : I rejoiced to hear of his success.


7)Sprawl
Meaning : to sit or lie with your arms and legs spread out/ a large area covered with buildings

Sentence : He was sprawling in an armchair in front of the TV

My own sentence : Eberlae sprawled out from a puddle


8)Patronize
Meaning : If someone patronizes a place such as a pub, bar, or hotel, they are one of its customers

Sentence : That store is patronized by wealthy ladies.

My own sentence : My family patronize this restaurant.


9)Bevy
Meaning : a group of people all together in one place.

Sentence : There is a bevy of bright young officers

My own sentence : I could see a bevy of girls at the theatre


10)Defy
Meaning : to challenge someone to do it when you think that they will be unable to do it or too frightened to do it

Sentence : It's a devastating and barbaric act that defies all comprehension.

My own sentence : The students chattered cheerfully in Singlish, and their "lah" carelessly defied the "Speak Good English" campaign.

Hi Sir,
I will be sharing this vocabulary list with you.


1) Amok
Meaning: To behave uncontrollably and disruptively.
Sentence: It is unacceptable to amok in front of the guests.
Own sentence : The angry elephants ran amok during a show at a circus, trampling five people to death.


2) Magnate
Meaning: An influential businessman
Sentence: He is a magnate whom everybody know.
Own sentence : The oil magnate Sheikh Kassim Ali has made a ten-million dollar donation to UNICEF in aid of orphans worldwide.


3) Rapt
Meaning: Fully absorbed and intent; fascinated.
Sentence: I was totally rapt when I heard his speech.
Own sentence : The students sat quietly and listened to the guest speaker with rapt attention as he touched on the topic of cloning.


4) Illustrious
Meaning: Well known and highly respected.
Sentence: He was once a illustrious person, but after he committed a crime, nobody believe in him anymore.
Own sentence : After an illustrious administrative career, Mr Hatcher was awarded the Public Service Star.

5) Surmount
Meaning: To overcome a difficulty or obstacle.
Sentence: If only you have perseverance, then only can you surmount all problems.
Own sentence : Over time, the distressed family managed to surmount all their financial problems and lead a comfortable life.



6) Crony
Meaning: A close friend or companion.
Sentence: Do you have a crony?
Own sentence : The old man spends every evening at the park with his cronies.


7) Outlay
Meaning: An amount of money spent.
Sentence: What is your outlay for today?
Own sentence : He made a huge outlay on the investment but had yet to reap returns.


8)Bohemian
Meaning: A socially unconventional person, usually an artist or writer.
Sentence: The boy sitting over there alone has a bohemian character.
Own sentence : As he leads a lifestyle that is out of ordinary, people considered him a bohemian character.


9) Itinerary
Meaning: A planned route.
Sentence: Luckily we had our itinerary for the journey.
Own sentence : The tour company had an unusual itinerary which attracted many holiday makers.


10) Heinous
Meaning: Utterly wicked
Sentence: How can you be so heinous towards your cat?!
Own sentence : The convicted man was a heinous criminal who would chop his victims alive and then feed his dogs!

1. Arrears-money that is owed and should have been paid earlier
Sentence: They have fallen into arrears with the rent
My sentence: I have fallen into arrears with the bill from the bank
2. Assimilate-to absorb ideas, information, etc in the mind
Sentence: Children need to be given time to assimilate what they have been taught
My sentence-I need to assimilate what my teacher taught during the mathematics lesson
3. Balderdash- Non-sense
Sentence- He’s talking complete balderdash
My sentence- Stop believing things that is balderdash
4. Chivvy-To asks somebody repeatedly to do something, often in an annoying way.
Sentence: His mother kept chivvying him to get his hair cut.
My sentence: I kept chivvying my father to buy me a MP3 player.
5. Churlish-Rude or bad-tempered
Sentence: It seems churlish to refuse such a generous offer.
My sentence: The churlish boy refused to apologize to his parents for shouting at them.
6. Din- A continuing loud unpleasant noise.
Sentence: They are making so much din that I cannot hear you.
My sentence: The boys are being scolded for making a din during an exam.
7. Elucidate-To make something clear; to explain something.
Sentence: Allow me to elucidate.
My sentence: He elucidated to me what had happened at school.
8. Fuddled-Confused as the result of drinking beer.
Sentence: His mind was fuddled with gin.
My sentence: His mind was fuddled after he drank five bottles of beer.
9. Mentor-A trusted adviser of somebody with little experience in a particular field.
Sentence: She is a friend and mentor to many young actors.
My sentence: He is a mentor to many people.
10. Obtrude-To become or makes something/oneself noticeable, especially in a way that is not welcome.
Sentence: He did not realize how much he was obtruding on her grief.
My sentence: He always obtrudes one’s opinions on others.
