Reasons why clearing the Bukit Timah Nature Reserve are not the best way to solve our land needs.

- It holds 40 per cent of Singapore's native plants, for example, many of which are found nowhere else here. The reserve's fern valley holds plants which were first discovered in Singapore, and the fact that the fronds are proliferating means that the forest is doing well. For many of our plants, it is the last refuge on the island.

-The Nature Reserve plays a critical role in regulating the climate, and is home to the greatest number of plants and animals out of all of Singapore's diverse ecosystems. Some species like birds are close to extinction.
Without the help of larger birds such as hornbills, some trees could have difficulty dispersing fruit.

-The impact of a change in land use (including the clearance of forests) on water resources depends on more than just the removal of forested areas. Socio-economic factors, climate change, existing soil structures and topographies in different countries matter when drawing conclusions about the hydrological role of forests.

-Deforestation will result in greenhouse effect, that is, an increased amount of green house gases (eg, Carbon Dioxide) in the atmosphere. These greenhouse gases trap heat from the sun and thus increased the temperature of the Earth. An increase in temperature will lead to disastrous effects such as flooding of low lying areas (eg, Washinton DC, London).

1)Though shortage of lands is important, but once this nature reserve is cleared, Singapore will lose its last and only living museum. Younger generations will thus learn less about the natural habitat- lose their living museum.

Evidence:For many of our plants, it is the last refuge on the island. For the student it is a place of learning and a living museum of Singapore. For a scientist it is a place of discovery and a living library of wonders yet to be uncovered. For the ordinary visitor it is a place of peace and tranquility.

2)Singaporean tends to lose their last spot in which they can release their stress on the weekends- more stressful for them, that leads to bad working attitude.

Evidence:This small nature reserve is always packed with visitors during the weekends. Sunday mornings will see many families coming here for the fresh air and serene surroundings

3)Though it solve the problems on land shortage. However this will lead to Another major problem which is impossible to solve- Increase in Singapore temperature. Shortage of land can be solve through land reclamation. However, increase in Singapore’s temperature is definitely irreversible.

Evidence:If there is no trees in Singapore, there will be much more carbon dioxide as compared to oxygen. Thus singapore’s air pollution level will be quite high. Due to such cases, singapore’s temperature will be raised, causing an increase in singapore’s temperature.

because it only states how long the nature reserve has been there and does not show the why is it important to preserve the nature reserve. Furtheremore, although "The forests of South-East Asia have an evolutionary history stretching back millions of years" , many of them have already been cleared.

The following evidence supports my claim; as known to many, 95% of the natural forests in Singapore has already been cleared, thus clearing another 1% does not show any sign of harm done. I rest my case.

we have already lost many of our beautiful trees and creatures which used to belong to the Nature Reserve. If we continue to cut off trees, we might not have enough trees and might cause air pollution in Singapore.

And, the Nature Reserve is one of the Asia's oldest Nature Reserve and its also most of the tourists' attraction in looking around at the oldest Nature Reserve in Singapore. It will therefore, be better to preserve it.

1. During photosynthesis, trees give out oxygen which is useful for us
2. During photosynthesis, trees take in carbon dioxide which is harmful for our environment as it will increase ‘green house effect’ and global warming. This will make our environment even warmer and humid. In addition, we will have an increase in the number of natural disasters such as earthquakes and tsunami. Plus, ice at the North and South pole will melt and increase the tide of the ocean. Soon, there will be flooding of low-lying lands such as Maldives.
3. The Nature Reserve is a home for the animals, in which some are endangered. If we get rid of their home, most probably they will die and become extinct.
4. Walking through the Nature Reserve is a kind of relaxation to relieve stress

Arguing with perfection: Going to the shopping centre and watching movie is an entertainment. in the nature reserve relieving stress is making used of mother nature. Breathing in and seeing the sunset and sun rise is a pleasure. And this will remain in your memory forever. Can u remember the very first place u shop or the first movie u watched?
The nature reserve is a place full of greenery and pleasant to the eyes. This is call relieving stress!!!

regarding perfection's argument, singapore is so far the only country that has trees all along the roads of sgp an even btw buildings. Hong kong is an example of a 'real' concrete jungle. No trees can be seen along roads. why cant singapore be like Hong Kong so as to further develop sgapore and put sgp's limted land to full use? preserving the nature reserve will make the air around the nature reserve fresh but it will not affect much of the atmostphere as the trees that could be cut down is so little compared to the burning of forests in the neighbouring countries.

weigh the revenue earned by the tourism attracted by the nature reserve and the revenue earned by the govt from the contractors that built the projects nevertheless may it be a residential project or an entertainment one. In my opinion, the revenue earned by the govt from the contractors is more. This extra revenue is essential to the development of singapore as it increases the standard of living, education, and mostimportantly the economy.

Perfection said,However, i will like to stress that not everyone go the Reserve to relieve stress. Instead only a small group of people do it. Reliving stress has a lot of ways such as listening to music or taking a bath, not necessary going to the Reserve. Furthermore, the Reserve is far away from some people and it might not be useful to them. Hence we should not sacrify the economic benefits the clearing of forest can bring for the sake of the some group of minority. Therefore clearing of the Reserve is a wise and far-sighted choice. There are so much more advantages besides relieving stress. What is it about sacrifying the economic benefits the clear of forest can bring for the sake of the some group of minority? i do believe that only a small no. knows about this perfect relaxation. But how can, because of one problem, this be called sacrifying the economic benefits? Ridiculous!!!

Yes, the reserve is a wonderful place for students, but what proof have you that, students are fully utilizing this wonderful resource, to merit saving the reserve? I put it to you, that it is underutilized by students, and therefore, your argument does not convince me that the reserve should be saved for students - most of whom have little interest in it anyway.

regarding perfection's reply ' Hence the residents have to use the air con and thus increase their electrical bill. I don think you want this to happen in Singapore' clearing the reserve does not even affect the air con usage around this particular area. This Bukit Timah area is one of the richer residential areas. They are the ones with greater earning power. according to a survey online, the ones living around this area uses aircon almost all the time they are at home.So since they are so rich an increase in elecric bill does not really affect them financially.

You said Singapore's forest has been reduce to 5% so the more we should protect it. Bukit Timah nature reserve is known as "the lungs of Singapore" so without them the area of bukit timah will be warmer and the air will be oxygen-poor air so therefore non of the area should be touched. Singapore is also known as the garden city so if we destroy the forest it will defame it's nickname. If another 1% is being chopped down Singapore would turn into a city lik New York, so every part of Bukit Timah nature reserve should be protected and not destroyed for the rich and the famous.

When we keep animals in the zoo, the animals cannot have freedom to wander around and do their own things. Also, we can build more houses to support people but we shouldn't use the house of many other creatures. Everyone's ocmfort must be equal. It is absolutely not fair that we sacrifice the poor creatres' comfort just for our comfort. What I think is that, we can leave the creatures alone and we can either stay in our current house or build other houses from other places. Even if the older generation didn't at all care about us, we are well-educated humans, we should care for our future generations...We should be the good examples and showing others that we care about them...

It is NOT true that the older generations did nt care about us. If they did not, would we live such a beatiful life now? Would we have whatever that we want now? And, even if the older generations did not bother about us previously, this should be smoething that we should learn NOT to follow. We are people with brains and only stupid people do not bother about the future generations and only bother about themselves...

if indeed we cared about the future, we would not have cleared 95%of the trees singapore

most of the people are getting more and more selfish and they would not care about the furure generations and they will build terraces at the nature reserve, making the future generations homeless

i disagree Jeremy's statements..

"most of the people are getting more and more selfish and they would not care about the furure generations and they will build terraces at the nature reserve, making the future generations homeless"

it depends on who it is. Some naive poeple might think this way. However, being selfish like that, they might end up in a bad way. For example, now poeple buy terraces for their own sake, next time when the future generations strive more for themselves, they will tend to overpower us now and we might even end up homeless.
Now, very few people in Singapore are homeless due to previous generations caring for us. What we should do is, save the Nature Rserve, just upgrade our houses but do not build anymore as there are VERY FEW people homeless in singapore and building more will just harm other creatures from the Nature Reserve.

we can clear only a very small part of the forest as we need some land to build our houses...if not, people will have no place to live in...we are now trying very hard not to clear the reserve...we should definately avoid deforestation...

animals living in the forest, their habitats will be destroyed,& they will find a hard time finding a new home, or not even survive through out...

instead of overpowering us, they should be thanking us for giving them a life of luxury for building many houses for them

We are losing our precious natural resources, some of which could be a cure to fatal diseases. More than five species of frogs had been extinct due to the deforestation of rainforests in Brazil. The scientists suspects one of those frogs is possible cure of nerve cancer
Large clearing of trees may lead to soil erosion There was a soil erosion happened in Indonesia which resulted in several death and destroyed of houses.
Some rare species may extinct. Tigers are facing extinction due to the massive clearing of their settlements.

"i do not agree with this point. i dun think that people can onli relief stress by going to the reserve. i believe there are surely better ways of relieving stress.
younger generations do not actually care so much about the reserve. thus they would not need to go to the reserve just to learn about nature. they could easily get information form the internet nowadays. "

my response:
Well, i did not say that this is the ONLY way for relieving stress.Obviously u misread my argument! The point is, there are other ways to relieve stress, but only nature reserve can provides natural fresh air unlike the air u find in the others stress relieving places such as shopping centres, arcades or even pub!

Furthermore, regarding what you had said about the internet being an alternative source of info, "they would not need to go to the reserve just to learn about nature. they could easily get information form the internet nowadays." what makes u think that information gotten from the internet is more accurate then our research?

Most importantly, what you can find on the internet is second hand while ours is first hand! The writer who post the report may be biased for some reasons or may even hides some facts! Hence it can never be as accurate as ours.

Another point is, the writer may also leave out some important points which u may never find out too! Thus, if we were to use the internet as our only soure of info, we will not be getting the full picture. Using our own five senses to do our own research, will allow us to experience all the full picture first hand.

In conclusion, i still strongly believe that preserving nature is rather important. Like i have said, we do hope that our future generation may get to enjoy this wonderful piece of nature reserve. So, we should stop thinking of short term adantages. Think of the long term advantages instead!
