Reasons why clearing the Bukit Timah Nature Reserve is the best way to solve our land needs.
-Private and HDB home prices move up. HOME owners can ring in the new year with some good news after prices of private housing in the last quarter registered their biggest jump in almost six years. It was the seventh consecutive quarter to record an upswing and there is more to come with experts predicting that the increases will continue for this year. Owners of public housing also shared in the good news with prices in the sector finally rebounding after declining in the last two quarters.
-The government can earn a lot of money by the selling of plots of land. Demand for luxury bungalows hits 10-year high. SALES of the most prestigious type of bungalows here hit a 10-year high last year with more than $700 million worth of deals transacted. At least 90 of these good class bungalows (GCBs) were bought and sold. These landed homes in some of Singapore's most exclusive areas typically cost between about $7 million and $15 million. (06/01/2006)
-Singapore has limited land and resources; hence we must make an effort to use the maximum potential of lands. There will be more plots of land that can be put to good use. For example, housing for the people and shopping centres that attract both citizens and foreigners.
1.It is a large area of land which will be wasted unless further developed. 2.The revenue produced by selling the land will be very high. 3.Logged trees will also produce a lot of money
Anonymous said... Singapore needs the vast land space for its economic growth.
Argument)By clearing the nature reserve park, only 164 hectares of land can be achieved. But how exactly is this minor plot of land can improve singapore's economic? By building twenty more blocks of flats? I believed that lands could be reclaimed much more easily nowadays. By building more condos near those serenic sea views, wont it attracts more buyers?
"joel said... 1.It is a large area of land which will be wasted unless further developed. 2.The revenue produced by selling the land will be very high. 3.Logged trees will also produce a lot of money"
Yes, we can get more money by cutting away the land and build more buildings. however, since you said the selling of the land will be very high, that also means that mostly, only rich people can buy it. Therefore, it is unfair for the poor. However, if we preserve the Nature Reserve, both poor and rich get chances to visit our oldest Nature Reserve.
valerie... i agree that now that the world's population had increased, more forests are cut down for building homes for people. We should cut down forests for the homes of people...
Opinion There are many poisonous arthropods, insects and reptiles in natural reserves or forest. Their bite might be deadly.
Facts In the web page http://members.tripod.com/~tchs981h08/bukit/page5.html, the web link Fauna: spiders, the second paragraph says “Since they are all poisonous but will not kill.” The Wood Scorpion is far more common than the Large Scorpion, which is 15cm long, and green-black coloured.
Opinion This is the same as the point above but the supporting evidence is about reptiles.
Facts Snakes are also poisonous and if u are not careful the poison from the snake will attack the heart. A Blue-necked Kneelback is a 60cm long snake. Its body is brown or red with a black stripe running down the back.
Opinion In the forest there are a lot of birds. If the residents dry their clothes outside their houses, the bird may poop on their clothes and they will have to rewash it.
Facts The forest has lots of birds and they will poop on their shirt my mother told me that it happened to one of her friends.
Opinion We don’t earn money if the trees stand there, it doesn’t pay us rent. So we might just clear the forest and build malls or condominium and earn money from residents wanting to live there or shop there.

I feel that we can reclaim land.We can build more houses by clearing forest but many animal populations will die.
1.Singapore is a country that has a very limited land area for development of buildings and housing. Most of the available land have already been used up for current developments. To plan ahead in the interest of our future generations, It is reasonable that we clear the reserve and put good use to the 163-heteres of land.It is reasonable to trade off one need for another. 2.It will generate revenue for the government if it sells prime land to the development. The developers will pay top dollars just to build a residential area right smack in Bukit timah nature reserve as 3.Saving nature will not help in the development in Singapore to its upmost potential.
1. In a developed country like Singapore, land is important for buildings to provide for the increasing population and tourism. The area of land is big for the development of Singapore. 2. There is a limited amount of land in Singapore, so we should make use of every hectare of land for our development. 3. Saving the nature reserve would not help the government earn revenues.

The reclaimation of the land is very expensive. We should clear the reserve to build more buildings as buildings are more useful... If we reclaim the land, we will kill many marine lifes...
If we reclaim the land,Singapore gets bigger & we might have arguements with Malaysia we are getting closer & closer to the border of their country...Malaysia will probably stop supplying Singapore with water...etc.

there are many living creatures in the Nature Reserve now and if we destroy it for our own comfort, it'll be very unfair to them. And, there are more condominiums and terrace houses around now, there will be very much no trouble for people to live in those houses. It may not be as comfortable but at least, we get to save both points. We can get a house to live in and the creatures in the Nature Reserve can also be as comfortable...

I would say that if the world is fair i would agree with you. However i must remind that the world is not fair. If the world is fair there would be no difference between the rich and poor. I conclude that your comment is childish because you did not think through other factors like the world is unfair and no one in the world can make it fair.

"I understand that we need more land. However it is not the only way to increase the amount land we have.We could reclaim more land or build higher buildings. We can even build the home underground."
i THINK Land reclaimation requires many years to progress and even after that, the government also needs to wait for many more years in order to use the land. Such method could not solve the problems Singapore is facing now AND COULD EVEN WORSENED THE PROBLEM AS lots of money are spent on this project which could only be profitable after a long years of waiting. This means that we suffeur losses for many years before we can benefit minorly from this project. To build higher buildings is also an impossible way as the land in Singapore only allows the government to built low-storey buildings. To build higher buidings could only endangers the residents living in that building. There are a lot of difficlties to build home underground. There are hardly any transport network connected underground and a well and precise plan is needed with many years of construction.Besides nobody wants to live underground.
